Examples of Thread Types

Machine Threads, Sashiko Threads, Embroidery Threads, what are differences? Me too, let's talk about it. The picture above shows a thin black machine thread, a brown sashiko thread and a blue embroidery thread.

Machine Thread

Machine thread is a staple in any sewing kit. It is a strong, smooth thread that is designed to run smoothly through a sewing machine. Machine threads can be made either natural or synthetic. The most common brand I find is 'Gütterman Sew All' thread, which is polyester. These available in a wide range of colours. machine thread is incredibly fine and can be tricky to use manually. They are very smooth and work well in machines.

Sashiko Thread

Sashiko thread is a 100% cotton. Often with 6 strands of cotton wound together to be used as one piece. Good for strength. As these threads are made from cotton they can be dyed, such as this variegated brown Olympus Sashiko thread.  This thread is ideal for visible mending, embroidery, and decorative stitching.

Embroidery Thread

Embroidery thread is a popular choice for embroidery enthusiasts. It is a six-strand thread that should be separated to create different thicknesses for various embroidery techniques.  Embroidery thread strands usually separate easily, unlike sashiko thread. Embroidery thread is incredibly popular and comes in a wide range of colours available, as well as different finishes, with 'pearl', 'satin' and 'effects', it's perfect for adding intricate details and vibrant colours to your embroidery projects.
