I worked in theatre as a Stage Manager for over a decade, in the West End as well as touring & festivals.  Which gave me a lot of experience making and repairing things from props like tarot cards, to building theatre sets, and repairing a torn costume (or two!) As well as plenty of paint covered and torn jeans myself.

Eventually I had so many pairs of ripped jeans I started to upcycle/repair them, as I didn’t see the value in replacing jeans only to tear them again later. This is when I got into Visible Mending & Sashiko, making and using transfers to help me learn to mend. Towards the end of Lockdown I launched Alfven on Etsy, selling sashiko transfers.

I continued exploring and learning different techniques, learning Swiss darning from Collingwood-Norris & doing an online sashiko course with Atsushi Futatsuya. As a result Alfven has expanded to include more sashiko threads, darning supplies & patches; and it’ll continue to grow as I learn more!

I truly believe that if you love an item of clothing, you love it enough to mend it; and if your spending time mending it it’s worth doing with quality supplies.
